Norman MacAskill always referred to himself
in the census forms as being a farmer.  As well, he was
a fisherman which would have been an important
supplement to the family income.  The abundance of
fish in the local waters would have been
an important source of revenue.

1891 Census

The 1911 census shows Norman and his wife, Mary,
living in Bay St. Lawrence and it appears Normans'
parents, (Neil and Maggie) were also living
in the same property.  Earlier census forms showed
the family living in Middle Ridge, Cape North.  It's unclear at
this writing whether the family originally settled in Cape North and
moved to Bay St. Lawrence OR if the polling districts changed
names over the years.  Georgina always referred to the 'old homestead'
as the original location of the family's life in Cape Breton.
That house is pictured below.

Catherine MacAskill Cooke standing in the field
with the old homestead in the background.  The really wonderful
thing about this picture is it shows the back of the house
which show the various additions that were built
over the years.

Death
Cause of Death was arterialsclerosis and diabetes mellitus.
The date of death on the certificate is April 14, 1943
although the date on the headstone is April 13.
