Both Lorene and Irene hated these black, sateen bathing suits.
Their mother had made them and each time they got wet
the fabric would cling in a very embarrassing manner.

I don't usually show unflattering photographs of people, however,
this expression on Nan's face is one I remember so well. She often had that
look and it wasn't anger or displeasure but usually simply concentrating on something or
perhaps her glasses had slipped a bit. I post it
here most respectfully and with extremely fond memories of her.
I also remember that necklace so well. I used to love seeing her wear it. As well, seeing the
sweater she's wearing in this picture reminds me of the enormous quantity of items she
knit or crocheted for the family: hats, sweaters, mitts, afghans and LOTS of slippers!

Lorene In The 1960's
It's generally accepted that the decade of the 1960's was a turbulent one, however,
Lorene and Charlie were settling nicely into retirement during this time. They moved
from Braemar Avenue to Markland Drive and their life was busy with family, church and various
activities. The big highlight of the decade was the birth of the fifth grandchild, Sarah de Gruchy,
whose arrival was a delight to the whole family. (Pictures of Sarah to come.....)

It Was All About Family
Having said that, so was every decade of her life!
In 1972 Lorene and Charlie celebrated their 47th Wedding Anniversary.
Many years there would be a family party to celebrate this occasion and there
would always be pink carnations. It became their tradition and I've always
liked carnations because of it. Grandad gave Nan pink carnations right from
the beginning of their marriage. During the years of the Depression there
were anniversaries when he could only afford a single bloom rather than
a bouquet but the pink carnation was consistent throughout their lives.
In the photo below are Lorene's grandchildren and the girls are
each wearing one of those celebratory flowers.
And Sarah is looking utterly adorable wearing hers!

It's a fine thing to see photographs of these family
get-togethers and also to see that we used to get
pictures of us all as a group.
It's sad to see how many of these relatives have
passed away though.

The 1980's Have Arrived
1981
This photo has been in the album for years and it's only
as I took it out to scan it that I realized just how amazing it
was that Nan and Grandad actually went to Canada's Wonderland
at their ages which were about 77! What I particularly remember
is that they seemed to have a really good time. However, I have
no doubt whatsoever they had to have been exhausted for days after!
How utterly familiar it is to see Nan knitting. She was of that
generation that never wasted time simply 'sitting' and kept her
hands busy all the time with her knitting--to the advantage of all of us!

daughter Jean Hill de Gruchy
How well we all remember Nan and Grandad preparing dinner
for the family. Grandad mashing the potatoes, the turkery waiting to
be carved and Nan with a can of cranberries ready to be opened. No doubt
there was a homemade pie somewhere on the counter behind them!

Saying Goodbye
Working on this page of Nan's has been as emotional for me
as the one I've done for my Dad. I still miss her and I know my brother, Peter,
and cousins, Charles, Jane and Sarah, miss her just as much as I do.
She was everything one hopes for in a grandmother and my memories of her
are more vivid now than they've ever been since scanning and editing
these photographs. I never felt anything from her but
the dearest love and acceptance.
These last two pictures represent the end of her journey
in this life and they were of the poorest
quality imaginable which meant it's taken quite a bit of time
to make them as presentable as she deserves. That time of editing
has been filled with many tears but also gratitude for having had
the best of grandmothers. She blessed us all with her love.
I know she lived a very long life but I wish she was still here.
I'm so grateful Katie knew her for as long as she did but
I wish Adora and Shiloh could have known her as well.
I wish Charles and Jane's children could have known her too.
She would have loved them all.
See you on the other side Nan.
